President Obama is not going to personally pay your utility bills, despite what some scammers are telling people over the phone. That’s just one of the claims being made during this election season. The Better Business Bureau says criminals are using incentives to get consumers to fall for their scams. Many involve participation in a political survey. The BBB says scam artists use information heavily publicized in the news to make their claims sound more legitimate.
Here are a few red flags:
- The caller asks to verify your voter registration
- The caller offers a prize for participation
- The caller asks for your social security or credit card number
- The caller seems to be using a high pressure tone of voice
