May is Older Americans Month: Volunteer with Wisconsin SMP!

With the advent of a new month comes new ways to get involved. So in honor of May’s distinction as Older Americans Month, help us “unleash the power of age,” and volunteer with Wisconsin Senior Medicare Patrol!

Nationwide, the SMP has more than 5,000 volunteers who help spread the word to Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers and professionals on how to prevent, detect and report healthcare fraud, waste and abuse. In our state, Wisconsin SMP volunteers dedicated 844 hours of service last year to spread the message of fraud prevention.

Want to join the cause? Attend the SMP volunteer training workshop on May 15 at the Thompson Community Center in Appleton. The workshop starts at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.

On July 10, the Wisconsin SMP will host an in-depth volunteer training session in Juneau that will provide participants with a solid foundation of knowledge about the SMP program; Medicare basics; and Medicare fraud, waste and abuse.

Wisconsin SMP is dedicated to ending healthcare fraud, waste and abuse. In order to do that the organization relies on volunteers who are willing to become educated about these issues and then be willing to spread that education within their own communities. This may mean becoming a speaker at an event or providing printed materials to consumers. There are several ways you can help. The following links provide detailed information and suggestions for getting involved.

Learning About the False Claims Act

The False Claims Act is a tool used to recover tax payer funds which have been paid out by the government in response to fraudulent requests, usually by government contractors. The False Claims Act seeks to reward individuals who try to stop abuse or report abuse. Attorney Nola Hitchcock Cross, Managing Attorney at the Cross Law Firm, S.C., has successfully prosecuted numerous False Claims Act cases. In the following podcast she explains how the False Claims Act works and clears up some misconceptions about it.

Seniors Learn about Fraud at Recent Wisconsin SMP Seminar

Seniors become informed about scams and frauds at a recent Wisconsin SMP training.

Seniors in Eagle River learned how to protect themselves against con artists – and watch for Medicare fraud – at a recent Wisconsin SMP training.

Wisconsin SMP Capacity Trainer/Manager Kevin Brown hosted the event, where seniors get an up close look at Wisconsin Senior Medicare Patrol, and learn about how these scams work.

These training events are an excellent way to learn more about scams that target seniors. It also offers important tools for those who want to volunteer with Wisconsin SMP.
